Photo: Jean-Pierre Clatot/AFP Joshua Melvin joshua.melvin@thelocal.com 17 July 2014 16:58 CEST+02:00 A deadly start to the climbing season on Europe’s tallest peak, Mont Blanc, has prompted renewed calls to impose restrictions on scaling the mountain that attracts up to 30,000 climbing parties each year and has the reputation of being one of the world's deadliest summits. It's just a month into the busy summer climbing season on Mont Blanc and authorities have already recorded the deaths of three climbers headed up to the top of the 4,810 metre (15,781 feet) mountain.

The latest accident happened on Tuesday when a 22-year-old Frenchman, just a day shy of his 23rd birthday, slipped and fell to his death while climbing on one of the many routes that leads to the peak.

His death, as well as the tale of the Polish climber who demanded to be rescued after deciding he didn’t feel like walking down the mountain, have reopened the long-running row about whether it's still a good idea to allow unrestricted access to the tallest mountain in Europe, which some consider to be the deadliest in the world.

Unlike legendary peaks in the Andes, Alaska or the Himalayas, no permit is needed to make the ascent of Mont Blanc, a fact that outrages those fed up with the fallout of the estimated 30,000 climbing parties that try to make the climb each year, many of them during the June to September peak season.

In a typical year those climbers prompt an average of 100 rescue operations, many of which are due to exhaustion, inadequate equipment or lack of proper physical preparation.

Also, some climbers just don't make it off the mountain alive.

The death toll varies greatly from year to year, but  2012 was one of the deadliest in recent memory. In just three days 11 climbers were killed in accidents, with nine dying in one avalanche.

In 2013 there was only one reported death of a climber, according to the local mayor.

'Mont Blanc has become like Disneyland'

With figures quoting up to 100 deaths each year in the entire Mont Blanc range, some consider it one of the most dangerous mountains in the world. But it's a reality that many see as entirely avoidable.

“It’s on the same list that includes going to Mont Saint Michel and getting a tan on one of France’s beaches and the whole thing reminds one of a large amusement park that goes by the name of Disneyland,” Jean-Marc Peillex, mayor of the town of Saint-Gervais which sits at the foot of the mountain, told The Local. “Mont Blanc is sold like it’s a simple trek, but in reality it’s a high-altitude act of mountaineering.”

Climbing Mont Blanc: 10 reasons to think twice about it

Peillex has repeatedly called for some type of restrictions on the mountain, whether that be a fee, a permit or a reservation system. But he said he has been rebuffed by the segment of guides and climbers who think the mountain must remain free.

Fourth-generation mountain guide Pascal Chapelland, who is based in Saint-Gervais, said he’d never be in favour of big fees, but he adds that the sheer amount of traffic means regulation will be necessary at some point.

“We will one day need to find a solution. The big problem is that historically there have been no rules, everyone does what he wants on Mont Blanc. Most summits around the world are subject to some kind of regulation,” Chapelland told The Local. “Our (guides) primary role is safety. For me safety is somewhat weakened when there is overuse. So for this reason, I would be rather in favour of limits.”

Among the massive crowds that flock to the peak each year, there are complete novices who attempt the rigorous climb with little or even no preparation and inadequate equipment.

Part of the reason these people end up on the mountain is that it's so accessible. Unlike peaks in the Himalayas that can only be reached after days of trekking, Mont Blanc is a short cable car ride from the urban bustle of the Chamonix valley.

'Broken tree used for an ice axe'

British guide John Taylor told The Local he’s seen a man using a broken sapling for an ice axe and a pair of climbers who dropped their packs in the midst of an area known for rock falls, one of the most dangerous on the climb, for a cigarette break.

But the French have not cracked down on this kind of behavior, partly because they're believers in personal responsibility, Taylor says.

"The French approach to risk is very different than the Anglo-Saxon attitude. They're attitude is 'go on, do what you want to do. But don't come running to us if you get in trouble,'" he said, noting Anglos are surprised by that because they assume they'd be barred from the climb if it was dangerous.

(AFP)

'Those who have accidents are providing a public service'

At least from a safety perspective he sees no benefit to regulating or restricting access to the mountain. He says there is so much information out there on Mont Blanc that people would have to almost willfully avoid it. And just looking up at the towering snow-capped peak from the valley below should be warning enough, he says.

“If you are going to do it, then I think you should be allowed to. I don’t think other people should have their freedom curtailed just because of this small number of people who make the headlines,” he said. “I don’t really believe in protecting people from themselves. We are all adults and the information is there, it’s everywhere, if you look for it.”

For Taylor the totally unprepared people are a small minority and he notes most of them, remarkably, make it through the climb alright. He thinks those who make the ascent without giving their bodies the time to acclimatize to the high altitude and without the proper equipment could even serve a purpose.

“I see it as self regulating. If people go up and have a horrible accident, I don’t want to sound callous, but there is a certain sort of public service element to it. When this gets reported other people look at it and go ‘maybe I better think twice about this,’” he said.

If you plan on sharing your vacation with a maintenance man this is the place for you. We had water pouring through 2 ceilings each time it rained causing one of the bedrooms and bathrooms to be unusable. The thermostat in the property doesn't work so the temperature is always at least 76 degrees inside and with no screens on the Windows it led to a uncomfortable nights sleep for everyone. The sink also leaked pouring your dishwater straight into the cupboard and kitchen floor. For the price charged it's completely unacceptable. Property is well furnished and extremely comfortable for upto 3 families. The location is not as good as some of the other places we have stayed in breck and vail as it is at least a 20 minute drive to good rest stained etc.

We are sorry that these issues happened during your stay. The water issue was an exterior drain on the hot tub deck which was clogged during very heavy rain in August. The drain was cleared during the stay. The ceiling repairs was simple and quick coat of paint was taken care of the following week. Homes at the mountains generally do not have air conditioning. The in-floor heat systems were not operating. Daily temperatures in the mid to upper 70's are rare at this elevation. The windows normally have screens, not sure why some of these were removed but our maintenance department has re-installed the screens. Our staff is available 24/7 to respond to any issues a guest may have during a stay. Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. - The SkyRun Team. The house was great. All amenities were 1st class. Everyone that stayed had a fun time at Copper Mountain.

Would like to have had Windows opened but many did not have screens. Many flies that time of year.

The accommodations were as represented on the web site and the kitchen was well appointed. The free shuttle to the resort made it easy to get around and was a god perk of Lewis Ranch, We had a lot of snow just before we came so It was a bit difficult to find the ski in/ski out feature but it worked out well once we could look around. Did you find this review helpful: 111 | 101 Ashleythough from Alberta, Canada "> Beautiful. Review Submitted: 2/18/2014 8 of my colleagues and I stayed here for a staff trip in early February. We were all blown away by how beautiful the house was and it's surroundings. There was more than enough room for everyone (two of us shared a bed)and although the roof top hot tub fit 4 at a time the steam shower made up for it! There is an elevator available but it was out of order the time we were there. There are 5 sets of stairs including the garage so if you are unable to make the trek definitely check for the elevator availability first. I highly recommend staying in this property for any length of stay. The free shuttle showed up within minutes of calling it and was a 2 minute drive to the main village. The lifts are close and everything is right at your fingertips. It said ski in ski out and that was stretching it a little. You could ski in and out of it but with quite a bit of work especially for little kids. The kitchen lacked a lot of necessary utensils so I would suggest bringing some from home. The house was beautiful but it has a lot of steps so I wouldn't reccomend it to an older person or a disabled person. Did you find this review helpful: 113 | 100 "> D & J Review Submitted: 7/20/2012

We just got home and are already talking about when we can return! Our family and friends enjoyed this beautiful property and were extremely pleased with all of the luxurious amenities, from the steam shower, to the hot tub and the fantastic kitchen! The view definitely gives you a "rocky mountain high" & we enjoyed the patio and the cool weather. The location was great, allowing us to spend a day in Vail, only 20 minutes down the road, go horseback riding pretty much at the bottom of the drive, and white water rafting and fly fishing! I enjoyed a massage at the spa at the Copper Mt. resort, as well as a round of golf with my husband (o.k., he played, I drove -still fun!). The village was a fun place to wander around and we rode the ski lift up and hiked to the top for a truly breathtaking view. This ranks as our fav family vaca to date! Thanks to the Joch family for providing such a great house and allowing us to make some great memories.

If you are ready to step it up a notch, this is it!! Susan is wonderful! This home is very high end and has everything you want and need. Make a quit trip to the grocery store for your stay, and you never have to leave again. If you do want to leave for some entertainment, there is a bell shuttle service listed. We used the shuttle one evening to go to tubing hill. The shuttle held all ten of us. It was on time and we gave them a nice tip. When we were finished, they picked us up promptly and took us right back.

This home is exactly as described and more. There are three levels, which makes it nice and private if you have more than one family. The two master suites are more than you can ask for. One room is located on the bottom floor, and one is located on the third floor. They both have nice king size beds, beautiful windows surrounding you, and HUGE bathrooms. One bathroom has a beautiful soak tub and shower. The other master bedroom has a walk in steam shower, which we used every day. I think all ten of us could have fit in it! If you suffer from the altitude change, this shower is for you!

The middle level worked best for our families as the teenage level. There are two nice sized bedrooms with their own bathrooms attached. The showers are nice sized. The bunk beds are a great sized, fitting our 6'0", 6'3" boys just fine! Directly outside the two bedrooms is a large family room with cozy sofas and a flatscreen t.v. There is also a small size refrigerator which was convenient for their drinks, snacks, etc. I am saying this was our "teenage" level, but this level could occupy adults, couples or children easily and be equally comfortable. Also on this level is the ski locker. It is nice and big, plenty of room.

Amenities galore!!! Washer and dryer were top notch appliances and easy to use. The hub of the home is the kitchen which looks into the family room and dining room, pretty much making it one big room. The kitchen is well equipped and absolutely beautiful. The family room consisted of oversized comfy furniture and a very large flatscreen tv. Right off the dining room is the back patio with a nice grill. From the back deck, our crew walked about 40 yards to the ski run. We skiied right back into the back door when finished. Everyone loved the hot tub. It was on the third floor and completely private. The views were amazing. From the grand entrance to the two car garage, this home was just what we asked for!
